What is cupping?

While cupping gained mainstream popularity during the 2016 Summer Olympics when swimmer Michael Phelps showed up to the games with round purple bruises all over his back, cupping is actually one of the oldest methods of traditional medicine with its earliest recorded use dating back as far as 1550 BC.

Our San Francisco cupping therapy is a technique in which cups are used to suction the skin over acupuncture points, painful areas, or reflex zones. The cup creates a mild vacuum on the skin to lift the fascia and connective tissue. This vacuum can cause temporary red or purple pigmentation to appear on the skin but should not be painful, as the degree of suction is adjusted to patient comfort.

Cups usually remain in place for anywhere from five to ten minutes during our San Francisco cupping treatments.

What does cupping do?

Drawing up the skin is believed to open up the skin’s pores, which helps to improve subcutaneous blood flow to the skin and muscles and stimulates the autonomic nervous system to relieve pain.

From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, cupping promotes the smooth circulation of Qi and blood to release tension and break up obstructions, creating an avenue for toxins to be drawn out of the body. This helps to realign the natural flow of Qi, blood, and bodily nutrients throughout the body, thereby restoring physiological harmony and balance.

What are the benefits of cupping?

  1. Pain relief: Cupping therapy in San Francisco is often used to alleviate muscle pain, joint pain, and soreness. The suction created by the cups helps increase blood flow to the affected area, which may reduce inflammation and promote healing. It can be particularly beneficial for conditions like back pain, neck pain, and sports injuries.

  2. Muscle relaxation: Cupping in San Francisco can help release tension and tightness in muscles. The suction draws soft tissues upward, which may lead to muscle relaxation and improved flexibility.

  3. Improved circulation: The suction created by cupping can enhance blood and lymphatic circulation in the treated area. Improved circulation can help remove toxins and waste products from the tissues, promoting overall health.

  4. Stress reduction: Our San Francisco cupping therapy sessions are often reported to be relaxing and soothing. Cupping can help reduce stress and anxiety by promoting a sense of calmness and well-being.

  5. Lymphatic drainage: Cupping is believed to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid, which can aid in the removal of toxins from the body. This detoxification effect can contribute to improved overall health.

  6. Respiratory conditions: In some cases, cupping may be applied to the chest or back to help relieve respiratory issues like coughs, asthma, and bronchitis. This cupping therapy technique can help to clear congestion and promote easier breathing.

  7. Immune system support: Cupping is thought to stimulate the immune system, potentially helping the body fight off infections and illnesses more effectively.
