Suffering from migraines in San Francisco, CA?

A migraine is an intense throbbing and pulsing headache, usually occurring on one side of the head. It worsens with physical activity and is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, as well as extreme sensitivity to light, sounds, and smells. A migraine attack can last anywhere from several hours to days.

Migraine pain can be felt on the head, neck, face, or all over. When felt in the face, a migraine can be mistaken for a sinus headache, especially when coupled with other sinus-like symptoms such as nasal congestion, watery eyes, and facial pressure. When felt in the neck, a migraine can be mistaken for a muscle spasm or arthritis.

In as many as 25% of migraine patients, migraine headache pain is preceded by an aura. An aura is a group of sensory, motor, and speech symptoms that act as a warning signal that a migraine is about to begin. These temporary neurological symptoms may include visual disturbances such as bright flashing lights, dots, and wavy or jagged zig-zag lines, as well as blind spots, vision loss, numbness and tingling, trouble speaking, confusion, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo (dizziness as if the room is spinning), and changes in smell or taste.

Migraines can be caused by a variety of different factors.

Common triggers include

  • Alcohol

  • Caffeine

  • Stress

  • Hormonal changes in women

  • Bright, flashing lights, including fluorescent lighting, TV and computer screens, and sunlight

  • Loud sounds

  • Strong smells such as perfumes, paint thinners, second-hand smoke

  • Changes in sleep pattern

  • Intense physical activity

  • Weather changes

  • Medications such as oral contraceptives and vasodilators

  • Skipping of meals

  • Certain foods like aged cheese and salty and processed foods

  • Food additives like monosodium glutamate (MSG) and the sweetener aspartame

Acupuncture is an effective modality for treating migraine headache pain. Dry needling for migraines can help to release trigger points where muscles are tight and constricted. Acupuncture for migraines can reduce inflammation, promote healthy blood circulation, balance hormone levels to reduce stress, as well as stimulate the release of endorphins to reduce pain.
